What is the difference between 2D and 3D ultrasound?
- The technology of 2D ultrasound has been available for years and is used for medical evaluation of the growing fetus. It is the preferred method for looking inside your baby, but offers little opportunity for you to see your baby’s outward appearance. With 3D ultrasound technology, you are given this opportunity to learn more about your baby since it provides you with an image that closely resembles a photograph of your baby.
What is 4D ultrasound?
- One of the latest developments in ultrasound technology is the 4D ultrasound. It utilizes 3D ultrasound technology, but adds the element of time and to the process. This allows for better “real time” detail, enabling you to see your baby in live motion video.
Using the 4D technology, you will be able to see your baby and flesh-tone color and count fingers and toes. It’s also fun to look at your baby facial features to see whom the baby most resembles. Observing the baby in action provides a realistic experience for everyone involved. It enhances the prenatal experience and strengthens the bond with all of who are present.
When is the best time to have an ultrasound?
- If you want to know the sex of your baby, we can look as early as 18 weeks. If you want the 3D image of your baby, we usually get better pictures from 25 weeks and on. Your baby is getting fatter at this point, so the 3D ultrasound images are clearer. However, near the end of your pregnancy when your womb is crowded and fluid levels are lower, it can be difficult image the baby; especially if the baby is facing down. We do our best to try and to get the baby to move and get parents a cute facial picture. (Mothers must be out of their first trimester – at least 16 weeks – for a scan.)
Who can come?
- We welcome any friends and family members that you want present. Grandparents really enjoy this experience. They marvel at the technology and also have a special appreciation for the new life coming into the family.
